What Pantothenic Acid Is
Pantothenic acid is vitamin B5, and its name comes from the Greek pantothen, meaning from everywhere — because it turns up in so many foods that a true deficiency is genuinely rare. Gelagen uses d-calcium pantothenate, the standard stable supplemental salt. It is the backbone of coenzyme A, a molecule involved in so many reactions that listing them is not useful.
What Pantothenic Acid Does For Skin
This is the barrier vitamin, and it is the one whose skin credentials are most visible in your own bathroom. Pantothenic acid supports the synthesis of lipids — the fats that make up the mortar between the flattened cells at the surface of your skin. That mortar is what keeps water in and irritants out. That evidence is for applying it. The evidence for swallowing pantothenic acid and improving the barrier from the inside is much thinner, and it would be dishonest to borrow the topical research to sell the oral version. What is true is that the vitamin is required for those lipids to be made at all.
Where Else You Get Pantothenic Acid
Genuinely everywhere, which is what the name says. Chicken, beef, eggs, mushrooms, avocado, sunflower seeds, whole grains and dairy all supply it. If you eat food, you are almost certainly getting some.
Pantothenic Acid: What To Watch
Extremely safe. Water soluble, no established upper limit, and excess is excreted. Very high doses can cause mild digestive upset and nothing more serious than that.
What Pantothenic Acid Is Not
Pantothenic acid and panthenol are the same vitamin in different forms, and the difference matters because of how they are used. Panthenol is what goes into moisturisers and is where the strong topical evidence sits. Pantothenic acid, or its calcium salt, is the oral form. Seeing panthenol on your face cream and pantothenic acid on this label means the same vitamin is doing two different jobs from two different directions.
